Credit Card Annual Fee Waiver Philippines: How to Request

BPI and RCBC both offer lifetime annual fee waivers if you hit their minimum spend in the first 45-60 days. Here's exactly how to qualify, with peso amounts and deadlines.

Annual membership fees for credit cards in the Philippines run from P1,200 to P5,000 per year. BPI and RCBC offer lifetime waivers if you're a new principal cardholder and hit their minimum spend within 45-60 days. These promos have been running consistently into 2026.

A basic card waiver saves you P1,200/year. Premium cards like the RCBC World Mastercard? P5,000/year, gone. Over 10 years, that's P12,000 to P50,000.

Who qualifies

You need to be a new principal cardholder with that bank. Already have a card with the same bank? You're out. Upgraded cards or recent cancellations (RCBC has a 24-month blocking period) are also excluded.

Cards from other banks don't disqualify you. BPI's Swipe & Save for Life and RCBC's No Annual Fee For Life both work for new, eligible rewards cards only.

Supplementary cards don't qualify for these waivers. BPI may charge fees from the second supplementary card onward.

If you're a BPI depositor, they sometimes have exclusive offers with zero spend required — just activate the card within 45 days via telesales or SMS invite. Call 889-10000 to check.

Step by step

  1. Apply for an eligible new card as a principal holder. Apply digitally through the bank's app or website. RCBC spend requirements: classics (Flex Visa, Mastercard) need P30,000; golds need P50,000; platinums up to P120,000. All within 60 days of receiving the card. BPI Rewards Card: usually P30,000. Gold Rewards: P50,000.
  1. Activate the card immediately. BPI often requires activation within 45 days. RCBC gives 60 days total. Download the app, scan, done.
  1. Hit the minimum spend. Use the card for everyday purchases, installment plans, online shopping, or recurring bills. Confirm whether GCash top-ups count — quasi-cash transactions (MCC 4829 or 6050) are usually excluded.

| Card | Min. Spend | Timeframe | |------|-----------|-----------| | BPI Rewards Card | P30,000 | Promo period | | BPI Gold Rewards | P50,000 | Promo period | | RCBC Flex Visa/Mastercard Classic | P30,000 | 60 days | | RCBC Gold cards | P50,000 | 60 days | | RCBC World Mastercard | P120,000 | 60 days |

For RCBC, spending on supplementary cards counts toward the principal card's minimum. The waiver applies to the principal cardholder only.

  1. Track spending. Use the bank's mobile app or check statements. Most banks auto-verify and credit the waiver without you having to call.
  1. If the waiver doesn't appear, call RCBC at 8888-1888 or BPI at 889-10000. They've manually tagged qualified cardholders before. BPI depositors should specifically ask about the telesales no-spend deal.

"Lifetime" covers card replacements too. Cancel the card and you lose the waiver — any reapplication follows new rules.

Real examples

A friend applied for RCBC Flex Visa, spent P30,000 on groceries and bills in two months. Waiver came through — P1,200 saved per year, permanently.

Another got the RCBC World Mastercard, hit P120,000 through a combination of SM shopping and installments. That's P5,000/year he never has to pay.

BPI Rewards Card just needs P30,000 on everyday essentials. The P1,200-P3,000 annual fee disappears for life.

Lower-tier cards like HSBC Red or Citi Simplicity+ often offer first-year waivers with just P5,000 spend, saving P1,000-P2,000 upfront.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Applying when you already have a card from the same bank, or after a recent cancellation.
  • Not activating quickly enough — BPI's 45-day clock starts when you receive the card.
  • Wrong transaction types. Quasi-cash and some non-peso transactions don't count.
  • Relying only on supplementary card spending at BPI (fees start from the second supplementary).
  • Assuming every card qualifies. Check the promo page first.

A friend missed RCBC's 60-day deadline by one week. Had to pay the P1,200. Don't cut it close.

Other banks

Not all banks offer lifetime waivers, but first-year waivers are common. HSBC Red Mastercard typically waives year one for free. Citi Simplicity+ often just needs P5,000 annual spend.

BPI and RCBC have been the most consistent with lifetime deals. BSP sets standard fees, so these promos are the main way to avoid them. Always verify via bank apps or websites — promos shift, but these two have held steady.

Action steps

Check eligibility on RCBCcredit.com/promos/no-annual-fee-for-life or BPI's Swipe & Save page.

Apply for a card with a spend requirement you can actually hit. BPI Rewards or RCBC Flex Visa are the most manageable.

Plan 5 purchases — Shopee, SM, bills — that get you to the minimum quickly.

If you're a depositor, call the hotline. Get that waiver locked in before your next statement.
