Remitly vs. Wise: Cheaper USD to PHP Transfers in 2026 Philippines

Wise delivers ₱5,350 more than Remitly on a $5,000 USD to PHP transfer. Here's the actual comparison with real numbers.

The real cost of sending money to the Philippines

If you're sending USD to PHP, you're probably losing more money than you think. Not on fees, on the exchange rate. That's where services like Remitly and Wise make their money, and it's where most people get caught out.

I ran the numbers on a $5,000 transfer to the Philippines, and the gap is pretty wild. Wise puts an extra ₱5,350 in your recipient's pocket compared to Remitly's standard rate. On a single transfer.

So which one should you actually use? It depends on your situation.

The quick comparison

When remitly actually wins

Here's the thing, Remitly isn't always the worse deal. If you're a brand new user sending $1,500 or less, their promo rate of 59.08 ₱/USD genuinely beats Wise. That's a real offer and worth taking.

The catch? It only applies once, and only on your first $1,500. After that, you're looking at their regular rate of around 56.43 ₱/USD. That's a real drop from the mid-market rate Wise gives you.

When wise wins (which is most of the time)

For anything beyond that first promo transfer, Wise comes out ahead. The reason is simple: they use the actual mid-market exchange rate, the one you see on Google or Reuters, and charge a small transparent fee on top.

Remitly advertises low fees but bakes their profit into the exchange rate. So you see "$0 fee" and think you're getting a deal, but your recipient is getting fewer pesos.

The math on a $5,000 transfer:

  • Wise: ₱291,475 received
  • Remitly (promo, first $1,500 only): ₱286,125 received
  • Remitly (regular rate): ₱282,150 received

That's a ₱9,325 difference between Wise and Remitly's regular rate. On money you were sending anyway.

How to actually send money

Both apps work roughly the same way:

  1. Download the app or go to their website
  2. Sign up and verify your ID (passport or driver's license)
  3. Enter how much USD you want to send
  4. Add your recipient's details, Philippine bank account (BDO, BPI, Metrobank) or GCash number
  5. Pay via US bank transfer (ACH) or debit card
  6. Track the transfer in the app

The whole process takes about 10 minutes the first time. After that, repeat transfers take about 2 minutes.

The mistakes that actually cost you money

Sticking with Remitly after the promo expires. A lot of people sign up, get the great first-time rate, and just keep using it without checking. Your second transfer onwards is at the regular rate, and that's where you start losing thousands of pesos over time.

Only looking at the fee. "$0 transfer fee" sounds good until you realise the exchange rate is 2 pesos below mid-market. Always compare the final PHP amount your recipient gets, not the fee.

Paying for speed you don't need. Remitly charges more for Express delivery. But Wise delivers over 60% of transfers instantly and 95% within 24 hours, at a better rate. You might be paying extra for speed that's already included elsewhere.

The careful play

Use Remitly once for your first transfer under $1,500 to grab the promo rate. Then switch to Wise for everything after that. For large transfers over $25,000, Wise even gives automatic fee discounts.

If you're sending money home regularly, the difference adds up fast. On monthly $1,000 transfers, switching from Remitly's regular rate to Wise saves you roughly ₱22,000 a year. That's real money.
